People with thalassaemia and sickle cell disease can live full lives and enjoy most of the activities that other people do.20, 21 Some behaviours can help to stay as healthy as possible:

Get regular check-ups

Regular health check-ups with your doctor can help to prevent some problems.3,15,16


Prevent infections

Infections are major complications and a main cause of morbidity in patients with thalassaemia. Common illnesses, like the flu, can quickly become dangerous for a child with sickle cell disease. The best defence is to take simple steps to help prevent infection.21


Learn healthy habits

People with thalassaemia and sickle cell disease should drink 8 to 10 glasses of water every day and eat healthy food. They also should try not to get too hot, too cold, or too tired.21,22

Health is a state of mind which comprises of physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease.20
